Rocking Cradle

One of my best accomplishments is a bed for small people.

As of this writing, this project has been my biggest undertaking. Last year end of March we were expecting the first addition to our family. Little Oliver joined us on April Fool's Day. This is where he slept (or... didn't sleep) for the first several months of his life.

This cradle is constructed of pine and black walnut. I painted the majority of the pine to give some nice contrast with the naturally dark black walnut. Also our house is trimmed in white, so it fits right in. Using mainly pine is great since it keeps the whole thing light and movable which is great if my wife or I want to move it by ourselves.

The rockers on the bottom allow the whole thing to rock side-to-side and there are knobs at the ends of the curved rockers so it doesn't tip over. The frame is all constructed using mortise and tenon joinery - keeping it very strong. Each black walnut spindle also fits into its own personal little mortise.

Beagle for scale

Here it is in use!!

I hope this will be a treasured heirloom that will pass down for several generations and rock many newborns to sleep.
